A boxer’s fracture is a fracture at the neck of a metacarpal bone, caused by a fall or by punching a hard surface. The fracture occurs most often in the fifth metacarpal bone.
What are the most common causes?
The distribution of force and angle of impact in a punch by a clenched fist will cause injury most often to the fifth metacarpal bone.
What are the symptoms?
The immediate symptoms are pain, swelling and bruising. The knuckle will usually disappear as a result of swelling.
How is it diagnosed?
X-ray is the best way to diagnose a boxer’s fracture.
