What are the most common causes?
Tenosynovitis is most often caused by repetitive motions of the thumb and wrist that put undue stress on the tendons of the thumb.
What are the symptoms?
The initial symptoms are tenderness to the touch and pain during some motions, along with swelling in the wrist at the base of the thumb. At a more advanced stage, the patient may have difficulty grasping objects.
How is it diagnosed?
The Finkelstein test is useful in diagnosis; it involves curling the thumb into the closed fist, then rotating the wrist laterally (opposite the thumb). This motion usually produces pain. Swelling is generally noticeable in the first compartment of the extensors.
