What are the most common causes?
- Trauma: Fracture in a carpal (scaphoid) or radial bone or a torn ligament (scapholunate or lunotriquetral) can cause rapid wear and tear on the wrist.
- Osteoarthritis: Normal wear and tear, with accompanying stiffness in the wrist, is part of the aging process.
- Rheumatoid and inflammatory arthritis.
- Gouty arthritis.
- Septic arthritis.
What are the symptoms?
- Joint swelling.
- Formation of cysts.
- Pain with motion.
- Stiffness.
- Dislocation.
How is it diagnosed?
- History and a clinical exam are generally sufficient to make a diagnosis, but it can be confirmed by X-rays.
- Blood tests might be required.
