What are the most common causes?

  • Trauma: Fracture in a carpal (scaphoid) or radial bone or a torn ligament (scapholunate or lunotriquetral) can cause rapid wear and tear on the wrist.
  • Osteoarthritis: Normal wear and tear, with accompanying stiffness in the wrist, is part of the aging process.
  • Rheumatoid and inflammatory arthritis.
  • Gouty arthritis.
  • Septic arthritis.

What are the symptoms?

  • Joint swelling.
  • Formation of cysts.
  • Pain with motion.
  • Stiffness.
  • Dislocation.

How is it diagnosed?

  • History and a clinical exam are generally sufficient to make a diagnosis, but it can be confirmed by X-rays.
  • Blood tests might be required.
