What are the most common causes?
The most common cause is a fall on the hand, when the thumb is bent away roughly from the index finger. The ligament often tears completely or detaches from the bone.
What are the symptoms?
Symptoms depend on the severity of the trauma, but include swelling, pain and reduced grip strength.
How is it diagnosed?
The injury must be diagnosed as soon as possible with X-rays. A clinical exam will assess joint stability.
