PRP injections for aesthetic purposes
What is PRP?
PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma. PRP therapy is a technique used in regenerative and aesthetic medicine. The plasma used is autologous, meaning that it is taken from the patient’s own blood. It contains growth factors elements which, once reinjected into the dermis, activate the natural process of cell regeneration and the production of collagen.
What areas can be treated?
PRP has already been used for many years. It has been shown to be effective and safe in the treatment of several musculoskeletal conditions. It is particularly used in orthopedics to treat tendon, muscle and cartilage damage.
In aesthetic medicine, PRP injections are particularly effective in improving the quality and tone effect of the skin, reducing hollows under dark circles, minimizing wrinkles, improving the appearance of acne scars and promoting hair growth.
How does the treatment work?
The process is simple and relatively quick. A small quantity of blood is drawn which is then centrifuged to extract the plasma concentrated in platelets. Only the enriched plasma is injected back into the area to be treated.
What is the treatment procedure?
- A small amount of blood is taken directly from the patient. This is a classic blood draw that does not require any prior or special preparation.
- This blood is then centrifuged to extract the PRP.This step is done using a small device specially designed for this purpose. The process takes a few minutes.
- The PRP is then gently injected back into the area to be treated using a syringe.
Areas treated at Exception MD
We currently offer PRP injections for aesthetic purposes for the treatment of 3 targeted areas: the tear troughs, neck and lower cheeks.
- Tear troughs (Dark Circles): PRP works directly to lighten and improve the density of the skin of the lower eyelid. The treatment gives a clear boost and a visibly brighter and rested look.
-
Neck: The PRP treatment improves the elasticity of the particularly fragile skin of the
neck and décolleté while smoothing out folds and reducing wrinkles. - Lower cheeks: By stimulating collagen production, PRP provides a tensing and lifting effect, helping to better define the oval of the face, which tends to lose its shape with age.
When are the results visible?
It all depends on the patient and the area being treated. The first results are typically noticed 3 to 6 weeks after the first session. Improvement can continue for up to 12 months after treatment.
How many sessions are required?
About three sessions, being 4-6 weeks apart, are required to achieve visible and lasting results.
Are there risks of complications?
PRP injections are a safe and secure treatment. As it is a natural injection product (which comes from the patient’s own blood), it offers perfect biocompatibility and eliminates the risk of allergic reactions. The redness is normal after treatment. Sometimes small edemas appear at the injection area. Recovery time is minimal and normal activities can be resumed almost immediately after treatment.
It is important to entrust the treatment to an experienced injector. At Exception MD, all treatments are performed under the supervision of a plastic surgeon.
