The symptoms of a wrist sprain

The scapholunate ligament, one of the most important ligaments in the wrist, stabilizes the scaphoid and lunate bones. But it is susceptible to tears, which can be serious when they cause instability in the wrist.

The triangular fibrocartilage complex on the ulnar side of the wrist is another ligament that is prone to tears when the joint is subjected to trauma.

What are the most common causes?

Wrist sprains are common and disabling, with ligament tears often occurring in falls or in sport- or work-related accidents.

What are the symptoms?

The wrist is generally quite swollen and painful, especially when moved.

How is it diagnosed?

A wrist sprain will cause swelling and pain, accentuated by movement. If a ligament tear is suspected, close examination and X-rays will be done. An arthrogram or MRI can also be useful in evaluating the extent of the damage.

Physical examination

X-ray
